Allan K. DuBois
State Bar President, 2015-2016

Allan K. DuBois was a solo practitioner at the Law Office of Allan K. DuBois in San Antonio, where he handled civil litigation and appeals, mediation, and arbitration. He was a trustee of the Texas Bar Foundation and also served as its grants chair. As a member of the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors from 2009 to 2012, he served on the Executive Committee, Professional Development Program Committee, and Nominations and Elections Committee.

As State Bar president, DuBois focused his efforts on raising awareness of the Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program and funding for the Sheeran-Crowley Memorial Trust, which provides financial help to Texas attorneys, judges, and law students who need treatment for substance use, depression, and other mental health issues. His candid disclosure of his previous alcohol dependency and decades-long sobriety instilled hope that recovery is possible, and his awareness efforts raised more than $500,000 for the Sheeran-Crowley Memorial Trust during his State Bar presidency.

DuBois also served as an adviser to the State Bar of Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution and Military and Veterans Law sections and the Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program and Legal Services to the Poor committees. He was a former president of the San Antonio Bar Association, a founding member and volunteer attorney for Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans, a former member of the District 10 Grievance Committee Professional Enhancement Panel, and a Sustaining Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. DuBois was a frequent speaker at TLAP seminars and at the time of his death was serving as chair of the Texas Center for Legal Ethics Board of Trustees and a member of the State Bar of Texas Local Bar Services Committee.

He received numerous professional awards, including the St. Thomas More Award from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 2017 for bringing attention to mental health and substance use issues in the legal profession; the inaugural Community Champion Award from the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Awareness in 2019 for his work as a member and officer of the council’s board of directors; and an Outstanding 50 Year Lawyer Award from the Texas Bar Foundation in 2021 for exhibiting “the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession and service to the public.”

DuBois received a B.A. in English from the University of Texas and was an Army ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate in 1967. He earned a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 1970.
